Feasting with thieves

Golden, crisp, large portions ... what more needs to be said?

Ahhh, fish and chips, always enjoyable on a brisk winter’s day, even if you must share with thieves.

For F&C in the Huon, we like Bugsy’s at Margate. We order the blue grenadier, a fish usually sourced from the deep clean oceans off Tasmania and New Zealand. Blue grenadier (often sold as “hoki”) is affordable, and as you can see – large portions.

As for the rest, the picture talks. Cooked to perfection. We have been there often enough to know this is the norm.

Afterwards, we go to Margate Train lolly shop to get the kids something for the drive home.

Then we eat salad for the rest of the week to compensate.

But beware the criminals. Never leave your chips. Tasmania has a crime problem, and seagulls are among the worst offenders. Read about other crafty crims.

And it’s everywhere. Even that bastion of fine seafood in Hobart, Mures, is not immune. We saw a seagull dive-bomb a seafood basket like a Stuka, making a young lady scream, but alas we were too slow to photograph the event. Happily, the (human) diner saw the funny side … as did everyone else.

At seaside locations, our feathered fiends will hover above, dropping bombs.

At any Huonville picnic, beware the Mallard and Co mob.

Of course, we are happy to live amid this crime spree.

Long live the crooks.
