Fire fuse is lit

Even a wonderful place like Tasmania can’t be perfect.

Tasmania’s Achilles Heel is fire.

This summer Tasmania has dozens of fires burning, courtesy of a dry thunderstorm that passed over the state on January 15.

If a weather front with strong winds comes through between now and the end of summer this will quickly turn into a worrying situation.

The fires are west of Hobart and a westerly is the prevailing wind in Tasmania, so they will slowly edge closer to the capital.

I post this as a preview as I expect late January and February are going to be tough in southern Tasmania.

The last very bad Tasmanian fires were in 1967, though there have been lesser firestorms since.

The map is today’s screenshot from the Tasmanian fire service map. I will post our own experience of the fires as things develop.
